Short answers for the things people do most in Chatimix. How your data is handled is in the privacy policy, and the rules for using Chatimix are in the terms of use.
Make Chatimix your SMS app
Texting works only on Android phones, and only while Chatimix is the default SMS app.
- During setup, on "Make Chatimix your SMS app", tap set as default.
- Choose Chatimix in the Android dialog.
If you skipped it or Android did not show the dialog, choose Chatimix in Android settings › Default apps › SMS app. You can switch back the same way at any time.
RCS turns off while Chatimix is your SMS app. Texts keep arriving over SMS and MMS.
Texting options are in Settings › Chats:
- SIM for texts: on a phone with more than one SIM, the one new texts go out on, or the phone default.
- delivery reports: the carrier confirms each text you send.
- fall back to SMS: a Chatimix message that can't be delivered within 30 seconds goes as SMS or MMS instead. That copy isn't end-to-end encrypted. It is on unless you turn it off.
- import SMS again: reads every text on this phone into Chatimix again, for example after another app restored them. Messages already in Chatimix stay.
Connect WhatsApp
Chatimix links to WhatsApp as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web. It is not an official WhatsApp client, and WhatsApp can ban accounts that use one. The app shows this before you link.
- Open Settings › Networks and tap connect next to WhatsApp.
- On your phone, open WhatsApp › Settings › Linked devices › Link a device and scan the code Chatimix shows.
- To link without scanning, tap link with phone number instead and type the code Chatimix shows into WhatsApp.
Keep WhatsApp on your phone and open it now and then: WhatsApp signs out linked devices when your phone has not been online for 14 days.
Connect Telegram
Chatimix becomes a Telegram client on this phone. Your Telegram app keeps working.
- Open Settings › Networks and tap connect next to Telegram.
- Enter your Telegram number, then the code Telegram sends you.
- If your account has two-step verification, enter that password too.
You can also log in with a QR code: tap log in with a QR code instead and scan it in Telegram › Settings › Devices › Link Desktop Device. Secret chats stay in the Telegram app.
Disconnect a network
Open Settings › Networks, choose the network, tap Disconnect with the network's name and confirm. Chatimix signs out and deletes that session from this device. Messages already in your inbox stay on this device.
Use Chatimix on another device
To link a computer or a browser to this phone, open Settings › Linked devices › Link a new device, open Chatimix on the other device and scan the code it shows. Messages sync end-to-end encrypted, and texts are relayed through this phone, so they pause while the phone is offline.
You can also sign in to Chatimix on another device with your username and password.
Settings › Linked devices lists every device signed in to your account and when each was last active. To sign a device out, tap it and confirm with your password.
Change your number or password
- change number, in Settings › Account: enter the new number and the code sent to it by SMS. Your account moves to the new number in one step.
- change password, in Settings › Account: enter your current password and the new one twice. Your other devices stay signed in.
- registration lock, in Settings › Account: pick a PIN of 6 to 20 digits. Registering your number on a new phone then asks for it. Keep it somewhere safe: without it, the number can't register again.
Back up your chats
Chatimix messages are end-to-end encrypted, so a new device needs your message keys to read older messages. Set up the encrypted backup in Settings › Chats › encrypted backup:
- Choose a passphrase.
- Save the recovery key the app shows. It works in place of the passphrase, and it is shown only once.
When you sign in on a new device, enter the passphrase or the recovery key to restore your keys. The backup holds keys only. Texts and messages from other networks are not part of it.
Unknown senders and blocking
While filter unknown senders is on in Settings › Privacy (it is on unless you turn it off), messages from people you don't know wait in unknown senders instead of your inbox. When someone is waiting, a link to them shows at the bottom of the inbox. For each one you can:
- accept, to move the conversation into your inbox;
- block, to hide the conversation and add the sender to your blocked list. They won't be told;
- report, to report the sender. Reporting a text forwards it to your carrier's spam number, 7726.
To see who you blocked, unblock someone or block a number yourself, open Settings › Privacy › blocked. Blocking works inside Chatimix on this device. It does not block the person on WhatsApp, Telegram or other networks, or in Android's own blocked numbers.
Privacy settings
Settings › Privacy holds the choices about what others can see and who can reach you:
- read receipts: when off, people on Chatimix no longer see when you read their messages, and you don't see theirs either: messages from every network show as delivered, not read.
- typing indicators: when on, people see that you are typing on Chatimix, WhatsApp and Telegram. When off, nothing is sent.
- find me by number: everyone, or nobody. Nobody removes your number from the Chatimix server, so nobody can find you by it. Choosing everyone again asks you to verify your number by SMS.
- find me by username: your @username is your Chatimix address, so anyone who knows it can message you.
- add me to groups and call me: everyone, contacts or nobody. Contacts means people in your phone's contacts and people you already have a one-to-one conversation with that isn't a request from an unknown sender and isn't blocked. Group invites from anyone else are declined, and their calls don't ring and show as missed.
- filter unknown senders and your blocked list: see above.
- link previews: when on (the default), your device reads the first link in a message to show the page's title and image. Links from unknown senders are never read. The web version shows no previews.
- disappearing by default: off, 1 day, 1 week or 4 weeks. New conversations you start get this timer.
In Edit profile › who can see, last seen set to nobody shows you as offline to everyone, and photo decides who sees your profile photo. Your phone number is never shown on your profile.
The privacy policy explains what the Chatimix server can and cannot see.
Storage
Settings › Storage & data shows how much space Chatimix uses on this device, split by photos, video, files and voice, with your largest chats and how much media each network takes.
- auto-download: what received media downloads on its own on wi-fi, on mobile data and while roaming: everything, photos or nothing.
- clear cache: removes downloaded photos, videos and files from this device. They download again when you open them.
- delete media older than 30 days, 90 days or 1 year: removes downloaded media from before then. It downloads again when you open it.
Everything Chatimix keeps is stored in the app on this device, so uninstalling Chatimix or clearing its storage in Android settings removes it.
Export your data
Open Settings › Account › export my data and tap export. Chatimix writes a .zip file with your conversations as a JSON file, together with the photos, videos and files kept on this device. On a phone you choose where to save it; in the web version it downloads. The file isn't encrypted, so keep it somewhere safe.
Delete your account
Open Settings › Account › delete account and confirm with your password. This deletes your Chatimix account and its messages on the server. Texts and messages from other networks stay on this phone. See the privacy policy for the details.
